Tell Tale Heart Analysis Essays - The Tell-Tale Heart, Point Of View

Tell Tale Heart Analysis ?The Tell-Tale Heart? by Edgar Allen Poe deals with a man's mental deterioration and his descent into madness. The story focuses on the narrator and his obsessions. It is told from a first person point of view by the protagonist himself. The point of view of the story is important because the reader only has one side of the story to work with. Therefore, the reader only knows what the narrator thinks and sees. This complicates things in deciding why the narrator goes insane. However, the narrator does reveal his insanity, and he reveals it through his obsessions. The narrator's obsessions include; his obsessions with his own sanity, the old man's evil eye, and the old man's beating heart. ?The Tell-Tale Heart? is a story about a man, in this case the narrator, who for eight consecutive nights goes to the bedroom of another man. He stands at the door watching the man sleep with a single ray of light pointing directly at the sleeping man's eye, an evil eye according to the narrator. On the eighth night, the man is sitting up in bed with his eye open, and the narrator, consumed by the ?evil eye? and the sound of the man's beating heart races into the room and kills the man in his bed. After the murder, the narrator dismembers the body, and buries the old man under his floor. As the story progresses, the narrator continually expresses that he is not mad. The way that he says this leads the reader to believe that the narrator is trying to convince him or her that he is not insane. However, he is really trying to convince himself that he is ?not mad.? For instance, the narrator, at one point simply says, ?If still you think me mad, you will think so no longer when I describ e the wise precautions I took for the concealment of the body. First of all I dismembered the corpse. I cut off the head and the arms and the legs.? The narrator is obviously under some deranged notion that it's normal to kill someone and hide the body. Aside from that, he is actually proud of his method for disposal of the ?corpse? as he puts it. At this point, it is safe to say that the narrator is definitely insane. The narrator also has an unusual obsession with the old man's eye. The idea of the ?evil eye? carries on throughout the story, until finally the narrator snaps, and does something about it. It takes the narrator seven days of watching the man sleep to finally act upon his instincts. He finally catches a glance at the old man's eye on the eighth night, and he is so enraged by this that he is forced to kill him. This isn't exactly something that can be considered normal. It can't even be considered normal excluding the murder for that matter. For a person to be obsessed with something as simple as the color of an eye doesn't exactly fall into the category of someone who is ?all there.? On top of this, he had no real motive for committing the murder. He even states this at the beginning saying, ?Object there was none. Passion there was none. I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. I think it was his eye! Yes, it was this!? It's almost as if the narrator, as he is retelling the sto ry, attempts to make up a motive for the murder. This seems like something childish. The way the narrator says the above line, it almost seems as though he is trying to make his story better. Without a motive, his story might be considered dull, and the reader may lose interest. An ?evil eye? livens the story up, and makes it more appealing to the reader. The way he expresses it however makes it sound as if the eye really wasn't his motive, and the only thing the narrator could remember about the old man was that the old man had ?a pale blue eye, with a film over it.? On the other hand, it is possible that the narrator really is obsessed with

Level of Unemployment in UK Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Level of Unemployment in UK - Essay Example This change will lead to a change in standards for living while supporting different needs for individuals. The basic definition of unemployment is when an individual doesn’t have a job and is nonworking. This definition leads the individual into a specific status that defines them as unemployed because they don’t hold a regular job and have inactivity in terms of finding a job. However, there are different measurements that are used for the unemployed because of the level of activity that is defined as well as the conditions in which different individuals are under. When looking at the overall idea of unemployment, it is defined by including anyone who is not performing a series of activities in the labor field or through a job. However, there are different levels that are included in this, specifically which is measured by the frequency in which one is unemployed as well as the basic structure that they rely on to receive monetary needs over a period of time (Brandolini, et al, 153, 2006). The structure of unemployment through the basic definition is defined by measurements that determine the frequency in which an individual is out of a job. This is defined first by an unemployment cell, which is divided by the amount of time one is out of a job as well as the frequency in which this occurs. This is also measured through the region in which one is in, specifically because it provides a comparison in the economic levels and demands for employment. The first measurement is known as seasonal unemployment, in which demands change based on labor intensive markets for each time frame. Most levels of employment that are offered seasonally include outdoor jobs and labor intensive options. The second type of unemployment is frictional, also referred to as demand – deficient unemployment. When the economy begins to emerge, temporary employment becomes available. This

Critically evaluate evidence obtained from a range of sources Essay

Critically evaluate evidence obtained from a range of sources demonstrating how it can inform practice - Essay Example In Wales, the National Health Services (NHS) holds the mandate of providing a functional framework that guides the entire social and health sector address the health needs of all the different groups. NHS also sets the required standards of health care that the people of Wales should enjoy (National Service Frameworks, 2012:1). The organization came into place in order to address the issue of inconsistency that had prevailed concerning the availability of and access to healthy care. Therefore, the organization has the special mandate of ensuring that a level of consistency does exist. In order to make its goals a success, the body sets up assessment measures of determining the rate at which the departments and organizations involved meet their goals. Moreover, NHS has multiple programs that foster implementation of its goals. Upon defining the desired health standards, it becomes easy for the body to recognize and address the issues that arise (Pierson, 2011:243). However, despite it s efforts, the organization lacks the capacity of handling all the health issues of the people of Wales (Pierson, & Thomas, 2010:185). The government of Welsh government has monitors and regulates the care delivery systems to its people (Welsh Government, ‘Bill’, 2012:20). It does this by designing policies, setting of standards, and inspection of service delivery programs and provision of funding to the local authorities. An independent committee looks into the delivery of social services in Wales and presents reports on the areas that need improvement (Independent Commission, 2010:8). According to recent statistics, a third of people in Wales live with a permanent condition reducing the quality of life that they lead. Moreover, a fifth of the entire population had disability issues in 2010 and the prevalence keeps increasing. Other researches indicated that the chances of disability increased with age. This translates to the fact that the

Western History :: essays research papers

There is no doubt that Napoleon had a major impact on the post French revolution period. First I will describe negative impact he had on France and western Europe then I will discuss the positive impact Napoleon had on France and western Europe. Napoleon became the first consul in 1799 and helped overthrow the government he once helped build. Napoleon set out to secure his position of power by eliminating all of his enemies and weakening all others. He also guaranteed the security of all other property gained in the revolution, this move made royalist very upset because the idea of returning the property to it’s original owners.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  During Napoleon reign he was either preparing for a war or at war. He wanted to all the European powers. Napoleon was quite capable of doing so with his prior success with the military. He then signed treaties with Austria and Great Britain. He wanted to establish France as a dominate power in Europe. The peace was very short lived France began an 11 year war period that started in 1803. With Napoleon in power, European powers began to fall one by one. First came Austria in 1805 next up was Prussia in 1806 then Russia in 1807 then finally came Spain.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Napoleon had some positive impacts but not many in my view on France and Western Europe. Napoleon reestablished relations with the pope in 1801 by the concordat, which recognized Catholicism as the religion of the French and restored the roam catholic hierarchy to France. Napoleon wanted France to be on top of everyone so he supported science work in areas such as physics and chemistry.

The Usage of Foreshadowing in “The Book Theif

Stephan Muccular 5/17/12 English 1 Mr. Smith Authors use a variety of literary devices to make a book more interesting and keep the reader in suspense. The author of the â€Å"The Book Thief†, Markus Zusak, likes to use the literary device called foreshadowing. He makes the book suspenseful, revealing how characters die early on and telling the reader the outcome to certain events. By revealing how characters die early on and telling the reader the outcome, Zusak makes the novel more suspenseful with his use of vague descriptions of the scenes which he is foreshadowing. In the book, Zusak tells the reader early on that Rudy, one of the main characters, is going to die. â€Å"He didn’t deserve to die the way he did†. Zusak then tells the reader how he died and two years later he is going to die. â€Å"Recollections like those merely remind me that he was not deserving of the fate that met a little under two years later†¦He’d have been glad to witness h er kissing his dusty, bomb-hit lips. † Rudy dies from a bomb. The question the reader would have is; two years from what? That’s what leaves the reader in suspense–the fact that the reader knows Rudy will die in two years, but does not know exactly when those two years start. This is a way Zusak tells us the future without giving us all the details. With just a little information, the reader is eager to read more about the situation and satisfy his curiosity. Alex Steiner and Hans Huberman had to serve the same punishment? â€Å"Alex Steiner wouldn’t have suffered the same punishment as Hans Huberman. At this point in the book, the reader wouldn’t know that why Hans and Alex would be punished or what their punishments would be. We know from this quote that they would be punished and their punishment would be the same. But this leaves the reader with questions like: What is Han’s punishment? Why is Alex Steiner being punished? Why is the punis hment the same? These questions have yet to be answered. Zusak is giving the reader a statement that raises questions that are not answered until later in the book, making the novel more suspenseful.Towards the end of the book, Zusak gives the reader a look into when the world ended for Liesel Mimmel, the main character. â€Å"I must warn you that it was raining when the world ended for Liesel Mimmel†¦.. Rudy Steiner slept. Mama and Papa slept. .Fra Holtzapfel, Fra Diller. Tommy Muller. All sleeping. All dying. † In the foreshadowing, Zusak tells the reader that everyone dies around Liesel, which is why her world ended. This leaves the reader in suspense because Zusak only tells the reader what happens–not when it happened, why it happened or why Liesel was still alive. These quotes from â€Å"The Book Thief† mentioned were examples of how Zuzak makes this book thrilling. By using vague descriptions of scenes, Zusak is foreshadowing which makes the reader wa nt to read more to satisfy the reader’s curiosity. This is how Zusak made â€Å"The Book Thief† so interesting and how, when a reader picks up the book and starts reading, the book is hard to put down.
